U4GM Tips for Phys to Element Defence in PoE 3 28 Mirage
#1
I didn't expect 3.28 Mirage to punish "tanky" characters this hard. Capped res, a decent armour roll, big life pool—none of it stopped the random deletes once Mirage packs started stacking their nonsense. If you're stuck in that loop of re-rolling maps and wondering where your defenses went, it's worth thinking about gear in terms of conversion and not just raw stats, and yeah, that usually means investing into pieces you'd normally ignore until later—sometimes even planning around Path of Exile 3.28 Currency so you can actually make changes before you burn out.
What was actually killing me
I ran a pretty simple test because vibes weren't helping. I did 1) ten 8-mod T16s with my "old reliable" setup (high armour, high life, capped elemental res), then 2) another ten with only two gear swaps: a chest and helm aimed at Physical Damage taken as Element using the new Mirage Orb crafts. Same atlas juice, same Mirage focus, same careless play. The difference was obvious. With the conversion pieces on, I still took hits, but I stopped getting erased in one animation. Armour didn't feel useless, but it clearly wasn't the answer to the burst that matters.
Why armour lies in Mirage maps
Mirage mobs don't hit like clean, pure physical slam monsters from older leagues. It's hybrid damage, weird spikes, and it feels like there's penetration baked into a lot of it. So your character sheet says "90% phys reduction" and you still explode. Converting physical to elemental changes the math in a way armour can't. Once that damage becomes fire/cold/lightning, you can lean on max res scaling, Arctic Armour, and the stuff that's actually consistent. Standing still is still a bad habit, but you'll notice you suddenly have time to react.
Crafting notes people keep missing
While I was rolling Mirage Orbs, I kept seeing "Phys taken as Fire" show up more often on Strength body armour bases than on Dex/Int ones. I can't prove the exact weights without datamining, but after a long crafting session it didn't feel close. If you're on something like RF Chieftain, that's not a cute detail—it changes which bases you should buy first. The bigger problem is cost: hitting a clean, high-tier conversion mod can take a pile of orbs, and that's before you even talk about fixing suffixes or getting life where you need it.
Making the setup feel unfair
If you want the "why am I not dying?" version, you stack conversion, push max res (90% matters), and then layer in something like Divine Flesh so part of the incoming elemental damage routes into chaos. That means your chaos res has to be real, not "kinda capped if I stand in my hideout." Add reliable Fortify and suddenly the first burst doesn't end the map. It's not cheap or fast, especially if you don't have hours to grind every night, so I get why some players just top up what they're missing through U4GM and move on to actually playing the content instead of living in the trade window.
